Health Workers Begin Warning Strike in Cross River State

Health workers in Cross River State commenced a warning strike starting at midnight on Monday, August 18, 2025.

Health workers in Cross River State commenced a warning strike starting at midnight on Monday, August 18, 2025. This industrial action was taken by unions including the Medical and Health Workers' Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), and other health sector unions.

The strike is a response to unresolved demands related to workers' welfare and entitlements. It follows a history of negotiations with the state government over issues such as payment of outstanding salaries, implementation of agreed wage increases, hazard allowances, and other benefits for health workers.

The warning strike is planned as a short-term industrial action intended to press the government to meet its obligations. It comes amid concerns that prolonged strikes could severely impact healthcare delivery in the state.

Government representatives have yet to officially respond to the strike commencement but have in the past expressed willingness to engage unions towards resolving the disputes.

The health sector remains a critical service, and stakeholders are urged to intensify dialogue to prevent escalation.
