Israeli Airstrike in Gaza City Kills Al Jazeera Journalist Anas al-Sharif and Four Colleagues

On August 10, 2025, an Israeli military airstrike targeted a press tent near the entrance of Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital, killing five Al Jazeera journalists, including the prominent 28-year-old correspondent Anas al-Sharif. The other journalists killed were Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa. The tent was clearly marked with a "Press" designation. The strike resulted in a total of seven deaths at the site.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed they deliberately targeted Anas al-Sharif, alleging he was the leader of a Hamas cell responsible for orchestrating attacks against Israeli civilians and military personnel. Al Jazeera strongly denied these claims, condemning the strike as a deliberate attempt to silence journalists reporting from Gaza amid the ongoing conflict.

Anas al-Sharif had been a well-known reporter extensively documenting life and warfare in Gaza. He had previously faced threats from Israeli forces. Moments before the attack, he shared a poignant message on social media warning about the devastating effects of the conflict on Gaza’s people.

The killing of these journalists has sparked international outrage and concerns over press freedom and the safety of media personnel covering war zones. Al Jazeera described the strike as a "targeted assassination" and called for accountability.

This event underscores the extreme risks journalists face while covering the Gaza conflict and adds to the mounting civilian and media casualties in the region.
