Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State - The Kebbi State government has officially confirmed the passing of the Emir of Zuru, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami (rtd), who died on Saturday night at the age of 81 in a London hospital following a brief illness.
The announcement was made by the Kebbi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday.
Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami, also known as Gomo II, was a revered traditional ruler who ascended the throne as Emir of Zuru in the mid-1990s. Before his traditional leadership role, he served with distinction in the Nigerian Army, reaching the rank of Major General and was a former military governor of Bauchi State during the military regime of Muhammadu Buhari from 1984 to 1985.
The late Emir is survived by four wives and seven children.
In a condolence message, the Kebbi State government extended heartfelt sympathies to the late Emir’s immediate family members, the Zuru Emirate Council, the people of Zuru, and the entire populace of Kebbi State. The government prayed that Almighty Allah forgives any shortcomings of the deceased and grants him Jannatul Firdaus.
Burial arrangements for the late Emir of Zuru will be communicated in due course.
The passing of Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami marks the end of an era for the Zuru Emirate, which he led with wisdom, dignity, and a commitment to peace and development for nearly three decades. His legacy as both a military officer and traditional ruler remains deeply respected across Kebbi State and Nigeria.
