Twenty-four hours after Nigeria’s male and female teams missed their chance to qualify in the 4x100m relay event, the nation’s 4x400m relay teams also failed to secure qualification at the ongoing African Region 2 Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.
The Nigerian men’s 4x400m relay team clocked a time of 3:05.22, falling short of the qualifying time of 2:59.12 needed to earn tickets for the World Championships in Tokyo next month. The women’s team similarly did not meet the qualifying mark, ending hopes for Nigeria’s presence in the relay events at the global competition.
The championships, held at the University of Ghana Sports Complex in Legon, featured competitors from across West Africa, with Nigeria fielding a 26-athlete team across 20 events, led by seasoned athletes like Patience Okon-George.
Despite the setbacks, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) remains optimistic about Nigeria's broader athletics prospects. AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa commended the athletes for their efforts and urged them to continue striving for excellence on the continental stage.
While the relay results were disappointing, ongoing competitions continue to showcase Nigeria’s rich talent in various track and field disciplines, fueling hopes for future success.
