Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has stated that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food are safe for human consumption provided proper safety measures are observed. Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, Adeyeye clarified that GMOs are not inherently dangerous; their safety depends on the type of food and strict adherence to regulatory safety evaluations.
She highlighted the critical role of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), which collaborates with NAFDAC to ensure GMO foods meet quality, safety, and efficacy standards before approval. Adeyeye emphasized that no GMO food product is allowed on the market without certification by NBMA after thorough laboratory and desk reviews.
Furthermore, Adeyeye urged consumers to check for proper labelling indicating genetically modified content and the official NAFDAC approval seal, enabling informed food choices. She also underscored that, alongside NAFDAC, other agencies have roles in ensuring food safety at the regional level.
In summary, Adeyeye assures Nigerians that while GMO foods can be safely consumed, vigilance in labeling and regulatory compliance is essential to uphold public health.
