Niger State Governor Umaru Bago Declares Himself Director-General of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Campaign

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has announced that he is the self-imposed Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Speaking in Minna, the state capital, on August 12, 2025, Governor Bago declared that Niger State would serve as the headquarters for Tinubu’s 2027 campaign.

In his statement, Bago criticized members of the APC who are pushing for a northern presidential candidate in 2027. He emphasized that there exists an unwritten understanding in Nigeria for power to rotate between the North and the South, which has contributed to peace in the country. He pointed out that the North had completed the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, and that Tinubu is currently in his second year of presidency.

Governor Bago’s self-appointment signifies strong grassroots and party-level support for Tinubu’s bid for a second term, underscoring efforts to consolidate the campaign early and maintain the existing power-sharing balance in Nigeria’s politics.
