A senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure, Dan Ulasi, has cautioned against the possibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan rejoining the PDP and contesting the 2027 presidential election. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Ulasi asserted that Jonathan has little new to offer and that his candidacy would likely secure an easy win for President Bola Tinubu.
Ulasi emphasized the strategic need for the PDP to field a candidate from the Southeast, suggesting such a move could bring lasting national unity by officially ending the lingering wounds of the Biafra civil war. He highlighted the importance of giving the Southeast a sense of belonging, considering the heavy human cost suffered during the civil conflict.
Ulasi further mentioned efforts within the PDP to bring back Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, noting Obi’s qualities and the optimism he inspires among many Nigerians. He argued that Obi represents a strong asset for the PDP due to his integrity and the hope he offers the country.
Reflecting on Jonathan’s tenure, Ulasi was clear that while Jonathan served six years as president, the party must focus on fresh leadership that resonates with Nigerians’ aspirations for progress and change ahead of the 2027 polls.
