Pope Leo XIV, in his largest public event since becoming pontiff in May, celebrated Mass with about one million young Catholics at Rome’s Tor Vergata, closing the Catholic Church’s ‘Jubilee of Youth’ in spectacular fashion. Pilgrims from nearly 150 countries camped overnight on the esplanade, braving summer heat for a week of worship, music, and solidarity.

During the Mass, the Pope urged young people to be “the sign that a different world is possible,” calling on them to spread hope, compassion, and their faith as they return home. He exhorted the assembled youth not to be trapped by consumerism, but to prioritize connection with God and service to others. In a heartfelt message, Pope Leo assured the young that “fragility is part of the wonder that we are,” urging them not to fear their longings or uncertainties.

The pontiff also paid tribute to youths affected by global conflicts, declaring, “We are with the young people of Gaza, with the young people of Ukraine, and of every land bloodied by war.” The event, filled with prayer vigils, personal testimonies, and Eucharistic adoration, marked the most-attended celebration of the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope.

The 'Jubilee of Youth' has drawn comparisons to World Youth Day, capturing the energy and global diversity of the next generation of Catholics. The Pope’s charismatic presence and openness in addressing both spiritual and contemporary challenges were on full display, reflecting his emerging appeal among youths worldwide.
