Retired General Ishola Williams, former Chief of Defence Training and Planning, has expressed strong optimism that Nigeria’s acute security challenges can be resolved within six months. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Friday, General Williams highlighted the country’s capacity to confront and overcome the pervasive insecurity ravaging various regions.
“We can solve the security problem in six months,” Williams declared confidently, emphasizing that Nigeria has the necessary resources and capabilities to address this pressing issue if properly harnessed.
The general’s remarks come amid ongoing reports of violent bandit attacks, kidnappings, cattle rustling, and communal conflicts that have destabilized parts of the country most recently the deadly attack on a mosque in Katsina State, where over 30 worshippers were killed.
Williams underscored that these security threats are often linked to broader issues such as resource-based conflicts, criminal enterprises, and weak governmental presence in rural and impoverished areas. Armed gangs have increasingly turned to extortion, kidnappings, and other criminal activities as lucrative operations amid governance gaps.
Despite the persistent challenges, the former defence chief stressed that a clear, focused, and coordinated strategy involving the military, intelligence agencies, and community collaboration can yield swift results. He advocated for a multi-dimensional approach, combining technology, human intelligence, and strong political will.
Williams’ positive outlook provides a hopeful perspective on Nigeria’s security future, urging stakeholders at all levels to work decisively to restore peace and enable citizens to live without fear.
