US Embassy in Nigeria Requires Visa Applicants to Provide Five Years of Social Media History

The United States Mission in Nigeria has mandated that all visa applicants must disclose their full social media history covering the past five years when filling out the DS-160 visa application form. This directive was communicated through the Mission’s official Twitter (now X) account on August 18, 2025.

Applicants are required to list every username or handle they have used on any social media platform, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter (X), Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and TikTok. The Mission has emphasized the importance of providing accurate and complete information as part of efforts to strengthen background security checks.

The announcement includes a warning that failure to provide this information or submitting incomplete or misleading details could lead to visa denial and potential ineligibility for future United States visas. Visa applicants must certify that all information in their application is true and correct before signing and submitting the form.

This policy aligns with broader U.S. Department of State initiatives aimed at enhancing national security by utilizing digital footprints in vetting processes. While some view the measure as invasive, U.S. authorities maintain it is necessary for transparency and security.
