Nigeria @65: Federal Government Cancels Independence Day Parade, Retains Other Activities

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the cancellation of the traditional Independence Day parade initially scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as part of the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary celebrations. The announcement was made in a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

While the parade will no longer take place, the government reassured Nigerians that this cancellation is not a reflection of diminished respect for the historic milestone. Other planned activities to commemorate Nigeria’s 65 years of independence will proceed as scheduled with dignity and enthusiasm.

The government expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and thanked Nigerians, members of the diplomatic corps, and invited guests for their support and cooperation. Citizens were urged to continue supporting President Bola Tinubu’s policy reforms aimed at national rebirth, economic transformation, and collective prosperity.

Traditionally, the Independence Day parade features a display of military might, cultural performances, and patriotic celebrations at Eagle Square, Abuja. The cancellation marks a notable deviation from past years but reinforces the government’s emphasis on reflecting the day’s significance beyond the parade itself.
