Villagers, Travellers in Danger as Link Road Collapses in Abia

The major road connecting Umuenyere Alayi and Item communities in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State has collapsed due to severe erosion, putting villagers and travellers at risk of falling into a deep gully.

The erosion started as a small spot but worsened suddenly last week, raising fears among local residents who frequently use the road.

Affected indigenes and transporters have appealed to the Abia State government for urgent closure of the gully and implementation of erosion control measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Community members have placed green leaves around the collapsed road section as a warning to approaching vehicles to avoid accidents.

Uwabunkeonye Bassey, Chairman of Bende Local Government Area, visited the site on Monday to sympathize with affected communities and assured that the government would promptly address the situation.

He also pledged to create a temporary access road for users and promised that the collapsed portion would receive government attention.
