ALGON Directs Edo Council Officials to Wear Tinubu-Branded Caps to Showcase Political Solidarity

In a recent directive, the Edo State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has ordered local government council officials to wear caps branded with President Bola Tinubu’s insignia during official meetings. The directive was issued by the Edo ALGON chairman, Rt. Hon. Sunny Ekpetika Ekpeson, as part of a broader effort to demonstrate grassroots political support for President Tinubu's administration and vision in Edo State.

The order mandates that all 18 local government chairmen across Edo State ensure their officials, including supervisory councillors, senior special assistants, and special assistants, comply by wearing the customized caps at council secretariats during meetings. This move is aimed at solidifying political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections and building momentum to convert pledged votes into tangible support.

Ekpeson explained that wearing the Tinubu-branded caps is a symbolic yet strategic step to foster unity and political cohesion at the local government level in support of the president. He emphasized the importance of translating the state's pledged 3.5 million votes for Tinubu into action, starting with visual and symbolic acts of loyalty from the grassroots.

This directive follows similar moves by Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, who has also mandated the wearing of Tinubu’s signature caps within his cabinet. Governor Okpebholo affirmed his administration's dedication to Tinubu’s leadership, stating that loyalty should be evident not only in words but in appearance and conduct.

The directive has sparked varied reactions within Edo State. Supporters appreciate the demonstration of solidarity and alignment within the ruling party, the APC, while critics argue that such moves risk reducing the state’s political autonomy by tying officials too closely to Tinubu’s personal brand. Some see it as a political strategy to bolster Tinubu’s influence in preparation for the 2027 elections, while others caution against prioritizing symbolism over substantive governance.
