The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yiltwatda, has announced that the party is expecting more defections from opposition parties, assuring that all newcomers will enjoy equal rights and privileges alongside longstanding members. Speaking on October 18, 2025, Yiltwatda emphasized APC's commitment to fairness and unity as the party continues attracting high-profile defectors in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
The chairman revealed that arrangements are near completion for key members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the APC, highlighting that defections are not limited to the PDP alone. He mentioned that several notable individuals including governors and current and former National Assembly members have undergone screening and would soon be publicly unveiled as new APC members. Yiltwatda stressed that the APC prides itself on being free from internal divisions, which has contributed to its growing acceptance and success under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
Yiltwatda praised President Tinubu for his inclusive approach, especially his support for minority groups, citing Plateau State as a prime example where the president’s policies have boosted minority voices. The APC chairman called on all defectors to feel welcomed and assured them of equal participation and treatment within the party framework, aimed at fostering cohesion and strengthening the party’s position nationwide.
In Plateau State, party leaders including Senator Simon Bako Lalong echoed the sentiment of unity, confirming the closure of ranks to ensure collective support for Tinubu’s re-election bid. The party’s stakeholders unanimously endorsed Tinubu, recognizing his governance achievements and commitment to national development.
This wave of defections and the promise of equal rights reflect a strategic effort by the APC to consolidate power across Nigeria’s political landscape by expanding its membership base with influential figures from opposition ranks. Analysts see this as a pivotal move to bolster the APC’s dominance ahead of the 2027 elections, with inclusiveness being a key message to maintain party solidarity and attract further support.
