The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on Nigeria’s 36 state governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to urgently disclose how they have spent the estimated N14 trillion collected as fuel subsidy savings through Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations since mid-2023.
In Freedom of Information requests dated October 4, 2025, SERAP demanded full transparency concerning the projects funded with the subsidy savings, including locations, implementation progress, and completion reports. The organization also requested details on how future subsidy savings expected from FAAC allocations will be utilized, along with any planned projects.
SERAP urged the governors and the FCT minister to publicly invite the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to monitor the spending, ensuring the funds are not diverted into private pockets.
Despite the substantial increase in allocations resulting from subsidy removal, many Nigerians continue to experience poor access to essential public services such as quality healthcare, education, and social welfare. SERAP lamented reports that some states are allegedly using the funds for unnecessary travels, buying luxury vehicles, and financing lavish lifestyles of politicians.
SERAP emphasized that transparency and accountability in the use of these funds are a constitutional and human rights obligation, vital for fighting corruption and improving welfare for Nigeria’s poor and vulnerable populations. The organization warned that legal action may follow if the requested disclosures are not made within seven days.
