Adekunle Gold Opens Up About His Ongoing Battle with Sickle Cell Disease

Nigerian music star Adekunle Gold has publicly revealed his lifelong struggle with sickle cell disease, a hereditary blood disorder characterized by abnormal, sickle-shaped red blood cells that cause severe pain and health complications. Adekunle first brought attention to his condition through his 2022 song "5 Star," where he reflected on his journey and resilience.

The singer’s openness aims to raise awareness and break the stigma surrounding sickle cell anemia, which predominantly affects people of African descent. Adekunle Gold has used his platform not only to share his personal challenges but also to advocate for better healthcare and support for others living with the disease.

In 2025, he launched the "5 Star Care" initiative through the Adekunle Gold Foundation, providing free health insurance covering routine care, emergency treatment, and long-term support for 1,000 people living with sickle cell disease in Lagos. This program is implemented in partnership with Lagos State Health Management Agency, Sickle Cell Management Initiatives, and the Lagos State Ministry of Health.

Adekunle Gold's partnership with researchers at New York University also focuses on exploring the social and medical impact of sickle cell disease, using music and storytelling as tools for education and advocacy.

Despite the ongoing health challenges, Adekunle Gold remains a powerful voice of hope, encouraging patients and the public to understand that sickle cell disease does not define one’s potential or life's journey.
