Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Africa’s largest and the world’s biggest single-train refinery with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, is now supplying approximately 20 million litres of petrol daily to Nigeria’s domestic market. This output represents a significant portion of the country’s average daily fuel consumption of about 50 million litres, marking a major milestone toward energy independence.
Farouk Ahmed, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), disclosed this during the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria Annual Conference in Lagos. He hailed the refinery’s expanding capacity as a game changer for Nigeria’s refining sector and energy security.
Dangote Refinery’s operations have progressively increased since its inauguration in 2023, ramping up from initial runs of around 350,000 barrels per day to near full capacity with consistent month-on-month production increases. The facility processes Nigerian crude and produces Euro-V quality gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, and petrochemical products.
Ahmed highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen petroleum infrastructure and supply chains, including plans to implement a National Strategic Petroleum Stock to buffer against potential fuel supply disruptions.
The refinery not only caters to domestic demand but also creates opportunities for exports, reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported petrol and boosting the country’s economic stability.
