The Labour Party (LP), led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has called on Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to redeem Nigeria’s democracy or risk burying it. The party emphasized that Amupitan’s leadership will be critical in restoring public trust in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing Amupitan shortly after his approval by the National Council of State, LP urged him to ensure transparency, independence, and fairness in all electoral activities. The party warned that Nigeria’s democratic future hinges on how effectively INEC conducts credible elections free from manipulation and fraud.
Amupitan, an academic and senior legal practitioner from Kogi State, has been described as apolitical and of unquestionable integrity by President Bola Tinubu and several stakeholders. LP and other groups are closely monitoring his first major tasks, which include implementing electoral reforms and addressing challenges experienced in past elections.
The Labour Party also stressed the importance of Amupitan engaging with all political parties and stakeholders constructively, fostering an inclusive process to rebuild confidence among Nigeria’s electorate.
