His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, has expressed grave concern over Nigeria’s worsening poverty and hardship. Speaking at the 24th Ofala Festival at his palace in Onitsha, Anambra State, the monarch described the situation as “critical and deeply troubling,” highlighting that 104 million Nigerians are currently living in poverty, representing a sharp increase from previous years.
Igwe Achebe criticized Nigeria’s political class for diverting their attention towards the 2027 general elections while millions of citizens continue to suffer from escalating hunger, insecurity, and economic difficulties. He warned that this premature political maneuvering, driven by selfish interests, risks exacerbating the country’s social and economic crises.
Citing the latest World Bank Development Update, the Obi noted that national poverty rates have risen from 40 percent in 2018 to 46 percent in 2023. He lamented the soaring costs of food, transportation, healthcare, and housing, alongside persistent insecurity that has severely impacted agricultural productivity, particularly in the South-East.
While acknowledging the federal government’s efforts at macroeconomic stabilization, the traditional ruler called for transparent and corruption-free distribution of relief materials and palliatives to the most vulnerable Nigerians. He emphasized the need for the government to ensure that aid reaches the intended beneficiaries without bureaucratic delays or diversion.
The Obi of Onitsha also expressed optimism that recent legal actions against separatist agitator Simon Ekpa might lead to a reduction in violence and kidnappings in the South-East, which have caused staggering economic losses estimated at ₦7.6 trillion since 2021 due to insecurity and disruptions.
Urging Nigerians and the Igbo community to unite and reflect on the harm caused by violent elements, Igwe Achebe called for peaceful participation in the upcoming off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State. He stressed the importance of voter turnout and political engagement to foster democratic progress despite the prevailing challenges.
The monarch’s address underscored the urgent need for empathy, resilience, and collective resolve as the nation grapples with its deepening economic and social hardships amidst political jockeying.
