The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Support Group has formally endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election. The endorsement was a key resolution from the group’s 8th meeting held between October 8 and 9, 2025, in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, which brought together party loyalists from all 19 northern states.
In a communiqué signed by the group’s Northern Coordinator Hon. Yusuf Abubakar and North-West Zonal Secretary Hon. Adamu Ahmed Narayi, Jonathan was hailed as a symbol of peace, unity, and progress. The group lauded his maturity, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy during and after his presidency.
The coalition dismissed lingering debates about Jonathan’s eligibility to contest again, stating that the matter has been settled and emphasizing that "there is no going back on Goodluck Jonathan to redeem our party’s image in 2027." The statement affirmed that Jonathan remains a loyal party member with wide respect across Nigeria.
The group urged the PDP leadership to mount a vigorous media campaign, particularly targeting the North, to highlight the advantages of Jonathan’s candidacy and rally popular support. They also expressed confidence in the PDP National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum’s ongoing reconciliation efforts aimed at unifying the party.
However, the communiqué criticized some party leaders, notably Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, accusing them of divisive actions and undermining party unity. The Northern Support Group called for disciplinary measures against those allegedly sabotaging reconciliation and working against the party’s interests.
The group underscored the PDP’s strong grassroots presence in the North and called for rebuilding party structures, restoring discipline, and projecting unity to reclaim power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
