Dharmendra, legendary Bollywood actor and one of India's most celebrated film icons, passed away in Mumbai on Monday at the age of 89, just weeks before his 90th birthday. Affectionately known as Bollywood’s ‘He-Man,’ Dharmendra defined an era with his dynamic blend of action heroism, romantic charm, and relentless screen presence in more than 300 films spanning six decades.
His family confirmed he died after recurrent hospitalizations for respiratory illness, with his final rites conducted at Pawan Hans crematorium amid tributes from family, film stars, and public figures. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and numerous senior officials marked the loss as the end of a significant chapter in Indian film history.
Dharmendra rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s through hits such as ‘Sholay,’ widely regarded as one of India’s greatest films, and enduring roles in ‘Chup Chup’ and ‘Meraon M Desh.’ His “larger-than-life hero” image, patriotic themes, and memorable collaborations with actress Hema Malini his eventual spouse—cemented his stature as a star beloved by millions.
He leaves behind a complex personal and family legacy including two wives, children Sunny and Bobby Deol, daughter Esha Deol, and nephew actor Abhay Deol many of whom continue his artistic legacy. Winning India’s Padma Bhushan award in 2012, Dharmendra also ventured briefly into politics, serving as a representative for the Bharya Jan Party in parliament.
