Enugu State has revolutionized healthcare access through its Universal Health Coverage (UHC) scheme, providing affordable care and free lifesaving services to vulnerable residents via the Enugu State Agency for Universal Health Coverage (ESA-UHC).
The agency disbursed N270 million in capitation to 276 Primary Health Centres in 2025, serving 53,652 vulnerable individuals under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund at just N1,000 monthly or N12,000 annually across public and private facilities. Executive Secretary Edith Okolo credited Governor Peter Mbah's support for building Type-2 PHCs in every ward, revitalizing Type-3 centres, and digitalizing processes for transparency and prompt payments.
Healthcare providers and local leaders praised ESA-UHC's efficiency, with 24/7 responsiveness enabling free treatments that complement council efforts, as the state advances UN UHC Day goals toward equitable coverage by 2030.
