An early morning fire devastated the Elegushi Model Market complex in Lekki, Lagos State, destroying 48 shops after starting from a makeshift stall around 2am Sunday.
Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed responders contained the inferno to prevent spread to adjacent buildings, with no casualties or injuries reported. The agency's Shark Response Team quickly extinguished the flames through coordinated firefighting efforts.
Post-incident assessments revealed extensive damage, prompting LASEMA to sensitize traders on fire prevention, urging installation of extinguishers, smoke detectors, alarms, and heightened awareness amid recurring market blazes linked to overcrowding and unsafe practices.
