UN Seeks $33B Aid: Nigeria Among 87M Nigerians Facing Wars, Disasters

The United Nations and partners launched the $33 billion Global Humanitarian Overview 2026 on December 8, 2025, prioritizing $23 billion for immediate lifesaving aid to 87 million people including Nigerians across 50 countries hit by conflicts, climate shocks, earthquakes, epidemics, and crop failures, aiming to reach 135 million total. UN Humanitarian Chief Tom Fletcher stressed "life by life" focus amid 2025's record-low $12 billion funding the decade's worst leaving 25 million fewer aided, slashing women/girls programs, closing aid groups, and killing 380+ workers, mostly locals.

Nigeria features prominently in West/Central Africa's $5.1 billion regional plea for 24 million vulnerable, grappling with violence-fueled displacements, hunger surges, and health strains despite partial 2025 coverage. Top appeals target Occupied Palestinian Territory ($4.1B for 3M), Sudan ($2.9B for 20M internally displaced, $2B for 7M refugees), and Syria ($2.8B for 8.6M). Fletcher decried humanitarians as "overstretched, underfunded, under attack," urging donors over 87 days to back protection and accountability.

The call addresses eroded international law respect, with Nigeria's banditry, floods, and IDP crises underscoring needs amid global shortfalls fueling famines in Sudan/Gaza.
