Ikpeazu Reflects: Operation Python Dance, EndSARS, COVID-19 Tested Abia Amid Lasting Achievements

Former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has opened up about the turbulent challenges that defined his 2015-2023 tenure, including military Operation Python Dance, the #EndSARS protests, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these "rough patches," Ikpeazu highlighted groundbreaking strides in education, infrastructure, health, and security that positioned Abia as a leader in multiple sectors.

Ikpeazu's administration navigated Operation Python Dance's military disruptions, #EndSARS youth unrest that damaged property across Umuahia and Aba, and COVID-19's economic shutdowns which halted projects and spiked unemployment. Legal battles over his 2015 election added political strain, yet courts upheld his mandate, allowing continuity. These events tested resilience but spurred innovations like homeland security and street lighting to curb crime.

Public school enrollment surged from 142,000 to 650,000 students via feeding programs and incentives, the first in Abia's history; ABSU climbed to second among state universities. Health firsts included the Abia Children’s Specialist Hospital, Telehealth linking 292 primary centers, and a 71% drop in infant/maternal mortality. Over 50 Abia youths received foreign scholarships, with 30 currently studying abroad.

Over 220 roads built, including Ariaria Market's first major facelift in 40 years with roads, drains, and traffic lights; 650 classroom blocks constructed. Pioneered Abia Poultry Cluster, SME Bank for business credit, and trained 30 shoemakers in China; completed International Conference Centre. Security improved via crime monitoring centers and lighting, boosting Aba's nightlife.

Ikpeazu positioned his record as "silent achievements" in job creation and quality delivery despite constraints, crediting teams for foundational work inherited by successors. While critics noted Aba electoral losses and inherited debts, supporters hail poverty reduction and firsts in agriculture, health, and education. His reflections underscore governance continuity in crisis-prone Igbo land.
