The Nigeria Police Force has officially acknowledged the abduction of more than 100 Christian worshippers in Kurmin Wali community, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following earlier expressions of uncertainty and partial denials that sparked widespread criticism.
The mass kidnapping occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, when armed gunmen stormed multiple churches during ongoing services. Reports indicate simultaneous attacks on at least two to three churches, including branches of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) and Cherubim and Seraphim denominations, in a remote forest area. Gunmen reportedly used sophisticated weapons to terrorize congregants, abducting large numbers of people including entire families, minors, and vulnerable individuals before fleeing to unknown destinations.
Community sources, church leaders, and a compiled list initially placed the figure at around 172 abducted individuals, with some escaping shortly after, leaving estimates of those still missing ranging from 163 to 168. However, in the latest confirmation from the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, authorities now admit the incident "did occur" and confirm over 100 worshippers were taken, aligning with verified intelligence and operational checks.
The police initially cast doubt on the reports after a Kaduna State Security Council meeting, where some local figures disputed the claims.
