Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dismissed allegations made by the state's former Head of Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, accusing him of sponsoring attacks on oil pipelines, bombing the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, and plotting to unseat President Bola Tinubu. In a statement titled "Ignore Nwaeke’s False Claims," Fubara described the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.
Nwaeke, in a televised interview with Channels TV, claimed that Fubara was behind the recent pipeline explosions in Rivers State, the bombing of the State Assembly, and secret meetings to support Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed’s alleged 2027 presidential ambition. He also alleged that Fubara had been holding nocturnal meetings with militants to destabilize the state.
However, Fubara swiftly denied the claims, questioning Nwaeke’s credibility and motives. He stated that as Head of Service, Nwaeke had no role in high-level political discussions and challenged the former official to provide evidence of such meetings.
“It is laughable that Dr. Nwaeke would claim to be part of any political meetings as Head of Service, much less allege that I held secret meetings with militants or Governor Bala Mohammed. No such meetings ever took place,” Fubara said. He also dismissed the claim that he encouraged attacks on oil pipelines, emphasizing that he has consistently advocated for peace in Rivers State despite political provocations.
Fubara further accused Nwaeke of being compromised, suggesting that his allegations were orchestrated by political opponents seeking to tarnish his reputation and disrupt the peace process initiated by President Tinubu.
“Dr. Nwaeke’s claims are nothing but desperate lies meant to discredit my administration and undermine the efforts of Mr. President to restore stability in Rivers State. I urge Nigerians and the people of Rivers State to disregard these falsehoods,” Fubara stated.
The suspended governor maintained that his administration remains committed to peace and development in Rivers State, calling on security agencies to investigate Nwaeke’s allegations and hold accountable those spreading misinformation.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State, with Fubara’s suspension and ongoing disputes between his camp and political opponents fueling instability. Observers warn that such allegations could further escalate tensions if not properly addressed.
Fubara’s rebuttal has drawn mixed reactions, with supporters dismissing Nwaeke’s claims as politically motivated while critics demand a thorough investigation into the allegations.
