In a significant escalation of the ongoing legal and political drama, Mrs. Unoma Godswill Akpabio, wife of the Senate President, has filed multiple lawsuits against Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan following the latter’s sexual harassment allegations against her husband, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
The lawsuits, filed at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, include a fundamental rights suit and a defamation case, with Mrs. Akpabio seeking a total of N250 billion in damages. The legal actions come in response to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims that the Senate President victimized her in the Senate after she refused his alleged sexual advances.
In the fundamental rights suit (Suit No: CV/814/25), Mrs. Akpabio argues that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations, made on the floor of the Senate on February 20, 2025, and later reiterated on Arise News TV, constitute a violation of her fundamental rights under Section 34(1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Articles 4 and 5 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Mrs. Akpabio is seeking the following reliefs from the court:
In a separate defamation lawsuit (Suit No: CV/816/25), Mrs. Akpabio is seeking:
A Retraction and Apology to be published in two nationally-read newspapers, The Guardian and This Day.
N1 Billion in Damages for the defamatory statements.
A Perpetual Injunction preventing Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan from making further defamatory statements against the Akpabio family.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had previously alleged that Senate President Akpabio made repeated sexual advances toward her, even in the presence of her husband, and that her refusal led to victimization, including the refusal to acknowledge her motions in the Senate. However, Mrs. Akpabio has dismissed these claims as false and motivated by personal gain.
Addressing a press conference yesterday, Mrs. Akpabio reiterated her stance, stating, “These allegations are baseless and designed to tarnish the reputation of my husband and our family. We will not stand by and allow such malicious claims to go unchallenged.”
The lawsuits mark a dramatic turn in the ongoing feud between Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Akpabio family, drawing national attention to issues of accountability, gender dynamics, and the treatment of women in Nigeria’s political sphere.
