The 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has announced the cancellation of the traditional Eid-el-Fitr Durbar festivities, citing security considerations and the need to prioritize peace in the state.
The decision was disclosed during a press briefing at the Emir’s Nasarawa Mini Palace in Kano. Bayero explained that after extensive consultations with Islamic scholars, community leaders, stakeholders, and members of the Kano Emirate Council, it was collectively agreed that suspending the Durbar was in the best interest of public safety.
Peace Over Festivity
The Emir emphasized that maintaining harmony and peaceful coexistence among residents was more important than holding the colorful horseback procession, which traditionally draws large crowds.
"The well-being and security of our people come first," Bayero stated. "After careful deliberation with respected clerics, elders, and my council, we have decided to forgo this year’s Durbar to ensure a peaceful and incident-free Sallah celebration."
Call for Reflection and Unity
Instead of the Durbar, the Emir urged residents to use the festive period to strengthen bonds with family and friends while observing Eid prayers in a tranquil atmosphere.
He also offered prayers for the people of Kano, asking Allah to accept their Ramadan fasts and grant them forgiveness and divine mercy.
The cancellation comes amid heightened security vigilance in parts of Northern Nigeria, though no specific threat was mentioned. The Durbar, a centuries-old tradition, is a major cultural highlight in Kano, featuring horse-riding displays by royalty, district heads, and traditional guards.

While some residents expressed disappointment, many supported the decision, acknowledging the importance of safety. Community leaders praised the Emir’s proactive stance, reinforcing his commitment to stability in the state.
