The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced plans to expand its transmission capacity to 10,000 megawatts (MW) within the next two years, up from its current evacuation capability of 8,500MW. This was disclosed by TCN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sule Abdulaziz, during the weekly Meet the Press briefing organized by the Presidential media team on Thursday.
Abdulaziz attributed TCN’s progress to the sustained support of the Federal Government, particularly through the Ministry of Power and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He highlighted several key achievements, including the installation and commissioning of 66 power transformers, the completion of new transmission substations, and the re-conducting of transmission line projects.
Other notable accomplishments include the completion of 6,000MVA worth of projects under World Bank-sponsored initiatives and a 76.47% reduction in grid disturbances over the past five years.
On ongoing and future projects, Abdulaziz revealed that TCN is currently executing the World Bank-funded SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) project, which is 69% complete. Once operational, the SCADA system will enhance real-time monitoring, improve grid management, and boost overall efficiency.
He also noted that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is enforcing the Free Governor Control policy to improve grid stability and reduce transmission losses. Additionally, TCN has introduced an enhanced maintenance regime, including regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and swift repairs to ensure the reliability of power infrastructure.
Despite these advancements, Abdulaziz acknowledged challenges such as insurgency, vandalism, and security threats, particularly in the North and South-South regions. To address these issues, TCN is collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and security agencies, including local vigilantes, to protect power installations nationwide.
Abdulaziz also announced a milestone achievement for the power sector, revealing that a new peak generation of 5,801.84MW was recorded on March 4, 2025, at 21:15 hours. He emphasized that TCN efficiently evacuated this bulk power to distribution load centers across the country.
DAILY MENTOR reports that TCN’s efforts underscore the Federal Government’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s power sector and ensuring reliable electricity supply for citizens. The ongoing projects and strategic initiatives are expected to significantly enhance the nation’s transmission capacity and grid stability in the coming years.
