Australian Prime Minister Vows Not to Bow to Trump on National Interests

In a televised debate ahead of Australia's May 3 elections, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged that his government would stand firm on protecting Australia's national interests amid ongoing trade tensions with the United States. The dispute involves former US President Donald Trump's 10 percent tariffs, which have impacted Australian exports.

Albanese emphasized that Australia would not compromise on key issues such as access to affordable medicines, health regulations on beef imports, and ensuring social media platforms pay for using local news content. Opposing leader Peter Dutton highlighted his party's connections within the White House, suggesting they could facilitate negotiations to resolve the tariffs.

Regarding defense, Albanese dismissed concerns about the potential withdrawal from the AUKUS agreement, which involves providing Australia with nuclear-powered submarines, stating there are no backup plans. Both leaders also addressed economic challenges, with Albanese supporting decarbonization and renewable energy subsidies, while Dutton proposed building nuclear reactors and slowing the adoption of solar and wind energy.

The debate highlighted the contrasting policies of the two parties as Australia approaches its upcoming elections.
