Oluwakemi Rufai, the only female member of the newly inaugurated legislative council in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, has died just two weeks after being sworn into office. She passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, August 13, 2025, following a brief illness.
The sudden death of the young councillor has been described as a devastating loss for both the council and the community she served. Ibeju-Lekki LGA Chairman Sesan Olowa and Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Chairman Rasaki Kasali confirmed the passing and expressed their deep sorrow over the tragic incident.
Rufai was widely regarded as a rising star within the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party that has also officially mourned her death. The Lagos State chapter of the APC lauded her leadership qualities, commitment to grassroots service, and pioneering role in gender inclusion within the council.
In a statement, APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo said, “Despite her short time in office, Rufai made a lasting impression through her dedication to community development and loyalty to the party’s principles. Her legacy of service, courage, and vision will not be forgotten.”
The late councillor’s passing has elicited heartfelt condolences from her family, constituents in Ward C1, and the broader Ibeju-Lekki community, as well as political colleagues who recognize the promise she embodied in her brief tenure.
