PDP Implodes: Owerri Zone Chairmen Demand "Sam Daddy" Reinstatement as Crisis Grips Nigeria's Opposition Party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, is embroiled in a series of crises that threaten its unity and future prospects ahead of upcoming elections. From internal factional disputes, leadership suspensions, court rulings, to calls for restructuring, the party’s internal struggles have become a major concern for stakeholders and supporters alike. The latest developments reveal a party grappling with its identity, authority, and direction at a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is highly volatile.

Owerri Zone Chairmen Write NWC, Demand Sam Daddy’s Reinstatement

The crisis within the PDP took a dramatic turn when the Owerri Zone chairmen in Imo State publicly wrote to the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), demanding the immediate reinstatement of Sam Daddy, a prominent party stalwart. The chairmen, in a strongly worded letter, accused the current leadership of marginalizing their zone and sidelining key stakeholders, thereby undermining the party’s unity in Imo State.

The Owerri Zone chairmen argued that Sam Daddy’s suspension was unjustified and that his leadership was crucial for the party’s electoral prospects in the region. They warned that unless their demand was met, the party risked losing further ground in Imo State, which is a critical battleground in Nigeria’s political calculations. The chairmen’s letter also cautioned the NWC against what they called “imposition and dictatorship,” urging a review of the leadership crisis in the state.

Imo PDP: Leadership Disputes and Court Rulings

The crisis in Imo PDP has been ongoing, with multiple factions claiming legitimacy. Recently, a Federal High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State, ordered the immediate removal of Engr. Charles Ugwu as the official chairman of the Imo PDP, citing breaches of the party’s constitution. The court’s ruling was based on petitions alleging that Ugwu’s leadership was unconstitutional and lacked proper internal party approval.

Following the court’s judgment, the party’s leadership in Imo State was thrown into further disarray. The court’s decision effectively disqualified Ugwu from holding any official position within the party, paving the way for a new leadership structure. However, the faction loyal to Ugwu has refused to accept the court’s ruling, leading to a stalemate that threatens to weaken the party’s structure in Imo.

Adding to the chaos, the party’s suspension of the Imo State Chairman, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, and the subsequent election of a new chairman, Hon. Gerald Ogoko, have not resolved the crisis. The factional disputes have led to confusion among party members and supporters, with some questioning the legitimacy of the leadership in Imo.

Wadata House Rumpus: Suspension and Counter-Suspension of PDP Leaders

The national headquarters of PDP in Abuja, known as Wadata House, has become a battleground for internal power struggles. In October 2024, the party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, was suspended by a faction led by some party elders, who appointed Yayari Mohammed as the acting national chairman. This move was quickly challenged by Damagum’s camp, which declared the suspension null and void.

The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed that the Damagum-led NWC dismissed the legitimacy of the factional leadership and maintained that the party’s constitution must be respected. The party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) also waded into the crisis, urging both factions to sheath their swords and revert to the status quo to preserve party unity.

The crisis at Wadata House has led to a situation where two factions are claiming leadership of the party, with each side accusing the other of insubordination and disloyalty. The party’s internal strife has also led to the suspension of key officers, including the National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, who is currently under disciplinary review for alleged misconduct.

Disciplinary Actions and Factional Suspensions

The PDP’s disciplinary committee has summoned and suspended several party officials, including Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom. The disciplinary actions stem from allegations of insubordination, disloyalty, and actions deemed detrimental to the party’s unity.

Anyanwu, who is also the party’s National Secretary, has been summoned to appear before the Ikimi panel over allegations of misconduct. Meanwhile, Ortom has also been summoned for comments and actions perceived to undermine the party’s leadership. These disciplinary measures have further deepened the divisions within the party, with supporters and members divided along factional lines.

The Role of the Party’s Top Leadership and the Call for Reconciliation

The party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), led by elder statesman Adolphus Wabara, has called for calm and reconciliation among the warring factions. In a statement, Wabara urged the leadership to prioritize unity and stability, warning that continued infighting could weaken the party’s chances in future elections.

Despite the calls for unity, the internal crises persist, with each faction accusing the other of illegality and misconduct. The party’s inability to resolve its leadership disputes has raised concerns about its readiness for the 2027 general elections, with critics arguing that the party’s internal divisions could cost it dearly at the polls.

Implications for Nigeria’s Political Landscape

The PDP’s internal crises come at a time when Nigeria’s political environment is highly competitive, with the ruling APC and other parties vying for power. The party’s ongoing struggles threaten to weaken its electoral prospects, especially in key states like Imo, where internal unity is crucial for success.

Political analysts warn that unless the PDP’s leadership can find a way to reconcile its factions and restore internal discipline, the party risks further marginalization and loss of voter confidence. The crises also serve as a reminder of the importance of internal democracy and adherence to constitutional processes within political parties.

A Party at Crossroads

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the Peoples Democratic Party stands at a crossroads. Its internal crises ranging from leadership disputes, court rulings, disciplinary actions, to factional rivalries pose a significant challenge to its unity and electoral viability. The Owerri Zone chairmen’s demand for Sam Daddy’s reinstatement, the court’s intervention in Imo PDP leadership, and the ongoing Wadata House crisis all underscore a party struggling to find its footing in a turbulent political landscape.

The party’s future hinges on its ability to resolve these internal conflicts and present a united front to Nigerian voters. Failure to do so could see the PDP further weakened, paving the way for the ruling APC and other opposition parties to dominate the political space in the coming years. For now, the PDP remains a party in flux, battling internal demons while Nigeria’s political future hangs in the balance.
