WhatsApp will cease support for several older mobile phones beginning May 5, 2025, due to changes in compatibility with outdated operating systems. The move is intended to enhance the app's security and functionality while ensuring compatibility with newer devices.
The change primarily affects iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1, specifically iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which cannot upgrade beyond iOS 12.5.7.
Android users were impacted on January 1, 2025, when WhatsApp dropped support for Android's KitKat OS and older versions. Affected Android models include Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini; Motorola Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014; HTC One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601; LG Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90; and Sony Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V.
Users can determine if they are affected by checking if their iPhone device accepts updates beyond iOS 15 or Android 5.0. If not, WhatsApp recommends backing up chats to Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone), checking for available software updates, or considering upgrading to a newer device.
