A devastating flood has claimed the lives of at least 21 people and destroyed over 50 houses in Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa, two communities in Mokwa town, Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. The tragedy struck in the early hours of Thursday following a prolonged, heavy downpour that caused surging floodwaters to submerge and wash away residential buildings with their occupants inside.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the disaster in a statement by its Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah. According to the agency, search and rescue operations are ongoing in collaboration with the Mokwa Local Government Authority, local divers, and volunteers. So far, three people—including a woman and her two children—have been rescued and are receiving treatment at Mokwa General Hospital for injuries and shock.
As of the latest update, 21 bodies have been recovered, while more than 10 people remain missing. The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) expressed deep shock at the incident, noting that hundreds of properties have been swept away and several residents, including children, are still unaccounted for.
N-HYPPADEC urged residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety instructions from emergency agencies to prevent further loss of life. The commission also called on stakeholders and government agencies to act swiftly in providing relief and support to the devastated communities.
The incident has left the affected communities in deep distress, highlighting the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness and response in flood-prone areas of Niger State.
