Protest Erupts on Epe–Ijebu Ode Expressway Over New Tollgate Charges

Angry residents and motorists on Saturday morning blocked the Ijebu-Ode–Mojoda–Epe Road in protest against newly introduced tollgate charges by the Ogun State Government. The demonstration caused major disruptions, with protesters using tires and wooden planks to barricade the busy dual carriageway, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded and halting traffic flow.

The protest, which began along the Fari Expressway and extended towards Mojoda in Epe, Lagos, saw demonstrators chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards to express their displeasure with the increased toll fees.

Many commercial drivers joined the protest, voicing their frustrations over the high charges. One trailer driver lamented, “I paid N3,000 just this early morning. How much are we making that they want to collect everything from us?” Another, identified as Mr. Odinaka, said, “I am traveling but I will stay here and join them to protest. They have to stop embezzling money from the poor citizens of Nigeria who are struggling to survive.”

The protest highlights growing public discontent over rising costs and government policies affecting daily commuters and transport operators in the region.
