At the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit held in Abuja on May 22, 2025, Senate President Godswill Akpabio delivered a resounding endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term. Akpabio boldly declared that Tinubu should not only be the APC’s sole candidate but also the sole candidate for the entire Nigerian population in the 2027 presidential election.
Akpabio praised Tinubu’s leadership since assuming office in 2023, stating that he has successfully navigated Nigeria through difficult challenges. He emphasized that all other political parties have been “turned into shreds,” leaving the APC as the dominant force in the country’s political landscape.
“Nigerians are saying because you have done a difficult job well, it’s time to reward you by sending you back to the presidency for a second term,” Akpabio said, urging party members and Nigerians to unite behind Tinubu’s candidacy.
The Senate President’s motion was met with overwhelming support from other National Assembly leaders, including Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, who seconded the endorsement. The Progressive Governors’ Forum had earlier expressed similar support, charging APC governors to mobilize voters and secure victory for Tinubu in the 2027 polls.
Akpabio also mocked the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), highlighting its internal collapse and disarray, particularly in the South-South region. He described the PDP’s presence as an “umbrella with 100 holes,” signaling its weakened state ahead of the next election.
The endorsement reflects a rare display of unity within the APC and signals a strong push to consolidate power ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts view this move as a strategic effort to build a formidable political machine around Tinubu, leveraging his administration’s reforms and growing public support.
With this declaration, President Tinubu is positioned as the front-runner for the 2027 presidency, facing minimal opposition from other parties, which are perceived as fragmented and weakened.
