National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has revealed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu inherited five major communal crises across Nigeria when it assumed office in May 2023. Speaking at the APC National Summit to mark the administration’s two-year anniversary, Ribadu emphasized that the government has made significant progress in reducing complex security threats to their barest minimum.
Ribadu recounted that prior to Tinubu’s tenure, Nigeria was plagued by frequent terrorist attacks, including the Abuja-Kaduna train bombing, the Kuje Prison break, the Owo church massacre, and an assault on an army battalion in Bwari, Abuja. He noted that terrorists had “run the country ragged” up until 2022.
Highlighting the administration’s achievements, Ribadu stated that over the past two years, security forces have neutralized 543 Boko Haram fighters and recovered and destroyed 11,000 illegal arms from terrorist groups. He credited these efforts with substantially reducing inherited security challenges, such as:
- Secessionist agitations by IPOB/ESN in the South-East,
- The sit-at-home protests in the South-East,
- Sabotage of oil installations in the Niger Delta,
- And other communal conflicts across the country.
Ribadu reassured Nigerians that the government remains committed to ongoing military operations in critical areas like the Tumbuktu Triangle and Tumbu islands, aiming to completely root out insurgents and restore lasting peace.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s progress and to appreciate the strides made in tackling insecurity since the Tinubu administration took office.
