As Nigeria marked Workers’ Day on May 1st, the Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) renewed its call on Governor Hope Uzodimma to expedite and complete the payment of outstanding gratuities to retired workers in the state.
During the May Day celebration in Owerri, the Imo NLC Chairman, Comrade Uche Chigemezu Nwigwe, commended the state government for steps taken so far to address workers’ welfare, including the payment of salaries and pensions. However, he emphasized that many retirees are still owed significant gratuity arrears, some dating back several years, and urged the governor to prioritize the full settlement of these payments.
“Retirees Deserve Their Due”
Nwigwe highlighted the plight of retired civil servants who, after decades of dedicated service, are struggling to survive without their rightful entitlements. He noted that the non-payment of gratuities has led to untold hardship for many elderly citizens, with some unable to afford medical care or basic necessities.
The NLC chairman appealed to Governor Uzodimma to fulfill his administration’s promise of clearing all outstanding gratuities, describing it as a moral and social obligation. He also called for a transparent and verifiable process to ensure that all beneficiaries receive their payments without discrimination or delay.
Other Workers’ Demands
Beyond gratuities, the NLC also urged the state government to:
- Address lingering issues related to promotions and salary arrears.
- Improve working conditions and provide adequate tools for public sector workers.
- Ensure regular dialogue between labour and government to resolve disputes amicably.
Government’s Response
Represented at the event, the Imo State Government reiterated its commitment to workers’ welfare and acknowledged the concerns raised by the NLC. Officials assured that ongoing efforts to verify and pay outstanding gratuities would be intensified, and that the government remains open to partnership with labour unions to address all legitimate demands.
The issue of unpaid gratuities is not unique to Imo State, as many Nigerian states face similar challenges due to financial constraints and competing priorities. Nonetheless, the NLC insists that the welfare of retirees must be a top priority, especially in light of their contributions to state development.
