Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway More Cost-Effective Than Other Major Nigerian Roads — Minister Umahi

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has clarified that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project costs less per kilometer than other significant road projects such as the Eleme-Onne and Abuja-Kano roads. Addressing concerns over the N4 billion per kilometer cost, Umahi emphasized that this figure is actually lower compared to the Eleme-Onne Road, which costs about N5.2 billion per kilometer.

He highlighted that the Eleme-Onne Road was originally designed with two layers of asphalt but was upgraded to reinforced concrete without increasing the overall cost, improving the road’s durability and quality. The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway contract was awarded to Hitech Construction Company Ltd., known for their expertise in coastal engineering.

The highway, spanning 700 kilometers across southern Nigeria, aims to enhance regional connectivity and economic development. Construction is underway, with the first 30 kilometers scheduled for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu.

Minister Umahi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure projects that provide value for money and contribute to national growth.
