The Abia State Government has confirmed a recent attack by suspected herdsmen in the Ohafia community, with several residents feared killed. The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Abia Command disclosed that it has been actively working to protect farmers and communities from such violent attacks, particularly in farming areas prone to conflict.
Commandant Akinsola Aderemi, representing the NSCDC at the 1st Abia NUJ Agric Show 2025 in Umuahia, revealed that the Agro Rangers Unit has been instrumental in maintaining peace and resolving disputes between farmers and herdsmen, including a recent misunderstanding in the Obehie area of Abia State. He emphasized that securing farms is critical to boosting food production and ensuring community safety.
Residents of Ohafia have reportedly suffered repeated attacks by Fulani herdsmen, leading to heightened fears and calls for stronger security measures. Social media reports indicate that after a particularly brutal attack, local youths have mobilized to defend their communities.
The attacks in Abia come amid growing concerns about land acquisitions by Fulani herdsmen in the Southeast, with traditional rulers warning that such land transfers could become bases for violent incursions. The government and security agencies have been urged to take decisive action to prevent further violence and protect vulnerable rural communities.
Efforts by the Abia government and security forces continue to focus on safeguarding farmers and restoring peace, but the situation remains tense as communities grapple with the threat of ongoing herdsmen violence.
