Former Senate President David Mark has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Benue State, warning that if the government fails to protect lives and property, residents may be left with no option but to take up arms in self-defense. In a statement signed by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Mark described the ongoing killings as “senseless, tragic, and unacceptable,” lamenting the loss of hundreds of lives and widespread destruction of property in communities such as Guma Local Government Area.
Mark emphasized that the primary responsibility of any government is the welfare and security of its citizens, and any failure to fulfill this constitutional duty constitutes a gross disservice. “This is the unfortunate reality the Benue people are confronted with. Government must rise to its responsibility or risk leaving the people with no option but to defend themselves,” he said.
He urged the Federal Government to urgently act to safeguard Nigerians and called on the Benue State government, led by Governor Hyacinth Alia, to intensify efforts toward restoring peace. Mark also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to collaborate closely with security agencies in identifying and apprehending perpetrators of the violence.
While acknowledging the pain and provocation endured by the victims, Mark urged residents to remain law-abiding and united, stating, “We must unite, mobilise, and speak with one voice against the invaders. We must refuse to bow to fear.” He stressed the importance of upholding peace and the spirit of communal support despite ongoing provocations.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that over 6,500 people have been displaced due to recent attacks, with security forces encountering heavy resistance while responding to the crisis. The situation remains dire, underscoring the urgent need for effective government intervention to prevent further bloodshed and instability in Benue State.
