EU Sends €1 Billion Loan to Ukraine as Russia Returns Bodies of 1,200 Ukrainian Soldiers

The European Union has disbursed another €1 billion ($1.15 billion) to Ukraine as part of a broader G7 aid package aimed at bolstering Kyiv’s economic resilience amid ongoing conflict with Russia. This latest tranche, the fifth under the EU’s Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) initiative, is funded by revenues generated from frozen Russian assets and will be used to support key state budget expenditures in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed the receipt of the funds on June 13, emphasizing the importance of continued international support in the face of increased missile attacks and destabilization efforts by Russia. Since the start of 2025, Ukraine has received a total of €7 billion from the EU under the ERA program, which is part of a $50 billion G7 loan package designed to be repaid using proceeds from immobilized Russian sovereign assets.

In a related development, Russia has returned the remains of 1,200 Ukrainian soldiers as part of a prisoner of war (POW) exchange agreement reached earlier this month in Istanbul. Ukrainian authorities confirmed that the bodies will undergo forensic examination to verify identities. The deal also included the exchange of thousands of POWs from both sides, reflecting ongoing diplomatic efforts to manage the human toll of the conflict.

The EU’s financial assistance and the prisoner exchanges underscore the complex and multifaceted nature of the war, combining military, humanitarian, and economic dimensions as Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty.
