Gunfire Erupts Between Suspected Herdsmen and Military Near Benue IDP Camp

A tense confrontation unfolded on Sunday afternoon as suspected herdsmen and military personnel exchanged gunfire near Tse Asha and Ukange villages in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident, according to eyewitness accounts, occurred just about two kilometers from the Ortese Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, raising fears for the safety of thousands of displaced residents in the area.

Residents described the situation as chaotic, with the sound of gunfire echoing across the villages and sending shockwaves through nearby communities. Zege Orkwande, a local resident, confirmed that the clash was ongoing and expressed concern over the proximity of the violence to the IDP camp, which houses people who have already fled previous attacks in the region.

As of Sunday evening, security operatives had not released an official statement regarding the incident. Efforts to reach the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to messages from reporters seeking clarification and updates on the situation.

The confrontation comes amid ongoing tensions in Benue State, where communities have repeatedly faced attacks attributed to armed herdsmen. The lack of immediate official communication has left residents anxious and uncertain about the security of the IDP camp and surrounding villages.

Authorities are expected to provide further details as the situation develops. In the meantime, the community remains on high alert as they await reassurances from security agencies regarding their safety.
