Nigerian Government Supplies Two Million Polio Vaccines to Kebbi State

The Nigerian government has delivered two million doses of polio vaccines to Kebbi State as part of a nationwide immunisation campaign targeting children under five years old. The vaccine supply was facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Health through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to halt the circulation of polio variants and strengthen immunity among vulnerable children.

Yusuf Umar Sauwa, spokesperson for the Kebbi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, confirmed the arrival of the potent booster doses, describing them as effective in interrupting polio transmission. He noted that Kebbi currently reports zero cases of polio, attributing this to the state’s strong surveillance and routine immunisation systems.

To tackle vaccine hesitancy and non-compliance, particularly in areas like Jega, Koko, and Birnin Kebbi, religious and traditional leaders have been engaged to help dispel misinformation and promote acceptance of the vaccines.

The campaign aims to ensure no child is missed, with Kebbi State Government providing cold storage facilities even in remote areas to maintain vaccine potency. This effort aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to eradicate polio and safeguard children’s health nationwide.

The vaccination drive is supported by technical partners including UNICEF, which has helped train health personnel and community mobilizers to ensure effective implementation.

Parents and caregivers have been urged to present their children for vaccination to sustain Nigeria’s progress toward a polio-free future.
