Activist and co-founder of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement, Aisha Yesufu, has called on the Nigerian Senate to begin impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu. Yesufu’s demand follows the recent massacre in Benue State’s Yelewata community, where over 200 people were killed in a brutal attack by suspected armed herdsmen. She condemned Tinubu’s failure to provide adequate security and criticized his silence and lack of empathy toward the victims.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Yesufu wrote, “Now that we have established beyond all reasonable doubt that Mr Tinubu cannot provide leadership for his party and definitely not the country he rigged election to govern, what is the Senate President Godswill Akpabio going to do? Isn’t it time for Impeachment proceedings to be on the table?” She further accused Tinubu of blaming community leaders for the killings instead of taking responsibility, stating, “No legitimate President will do that! What an utter shame.”
Yesufu contrasted Tinubu’s muted response to the Benue killings with his swift condolence over a recent plane crash in India that claimed over 200 lives, highlighting a perceived misplaced priority. She lamented, “Tinubu condoled with India and not with Benue.”
Her calls have resonated widely among Nigerians frustrated with the government’s handling of insecurity and the ongoing violence in several states. The activist’s demand underscores growing public pressure on the Senate to hold the president accountable for what many see as a failure to protect Nigerian citizens and uphold national security.
