Super Falcons Secure Convincing 3-1 Victory Over Ghana in Pre-WAFCON Friendly

Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a commanding performance to defeat their fierce rivals Ghana’s Black Queens 3-1 in their final preparatory match ahead of the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Sunday in Casablanca, Morocco. This victory sends a strong message as the nine-time African champions gear up to defend their continental crown starting July 5.

The match began as a tightly contested affair with both sides trading possession in the opening 30 minutes. However, Nigeria gradually took control, breaking the deadlock in the 34th minute through forward Chinwendu Ihezuo, who scored her second goal for the national team. Just before halftime, star striker Asisat Oshoala doubled the lead by calmly converting a penalty, marking her first goal for Nigeria in 2025 and a significant confidence boost for the Barcelona forward.

The Super Falcons came out aggressively in the second half, and within five minutes, Rasheedat Ajibade extended Nigeria’s lead to 3-0 with a confident finish, her third goal in two appearances this year. Ghana mounted some pressure late in the game, and although a potential goal by midfielder Evelyn Badu was disallowed for offside, the Black Queens earned a consolation penalty in the 88th minute, converted by Alice Kusi.

Despite Ghana’s late goal, Nigeria maintained composure to close out the match comfortably, showcasing their depth, experience, and attacking prowess. Interim coach Justin Madugu praised the team’s performance, highlighting the importance of leadership from veterans like Oshoala, whose calmness and composure in crucial moments could prove vital in the upcoming tournament.

This win is a morale booster for the Super Falcons as they prepare to face Tunisia in their WAFCON opener on July 6. The match also reaffirmed Nigeria’s status as Africa’s dominant force in women’s football, while Ghana demonstrated they remain a competitive and improving side.

The Super Falcons’ emphatic 3-1 victory over Ghana in this high-stakes friendly, often dubbed the Jollof Derby due to the intense rivalry, sets a positive tone for Nigeria’s quest for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
