Atiku Abubakar Officially Resigns from PDP, Citing Irreconcilable Differences

Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the PDP. He communicated his resignation in a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State. The resignation letter, confirmed and shared by his media team on July 16, marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

Atiku stated that his decision was driven by “irreconcilable differences” and expressed disappointment that the party has deviated from the foundational principles he once stood for. Reflecting on his years as a founding father of the PDP, two-time presidential candidate, and two-term vice president, he described the resignation as “heartbreaking” but necessary due to the party’s current trajectory.

His exit aligns with his growing involvement in the formation of the Allied Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, a new opposition platform aiming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections.

The PDP has yet to issue an official response to Atiku’s resignation. Political watchers view this move as a dramatic twist poised to reshape opposition politics in Nigeria.
