Jannik Sinner Reappoints Fitness Coach Umberto Ferrara After Doping Suspension

Jannik Sinner, the reigning Wimbledon champion and world number one tennis player, has officially reappointed Umberto Ferrara as his fitness coach just weeks before major tournaments including the Cincinnati Open and US Open. Ferrara was previously dismissed by Sinner in August 2024 following the infamous doping case in which Sinner tested positive twice for trace amounts of the banned anabolic steroid Clostebol.

The positive tests were linked to an inadvertent contamination when Ferrara supplied a healing spray containing Clostebol to Sinner’s physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, who used it to treat a cut on Sinner’s hand without precautionary gloves. Sinner accepted a three-month suspension earlier this year as part of a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Despite the suspension, Sinner returned in May 2025, winning Wimbledon and reaching the French Open final.

Sinner’s team released a statement acknowledging Ferrara’s important role in the player’s growth and emphasizing that reappointing him reflects a renewed commitment to consistency and peak performance. This move comes after Sinner parted ways with other fitness coaches ahead of Wimbledon 2025.

Ferrara, who had cautioned against the use of the Clostebol-containing spray, returns amid Sinner’s preparations for upcoming high-profile tournaments, aiming to build on the momentum since his comeback.

This development marks a significant chapter in Sinner’s career, highlighting resilience and a focus on continuity after overcoming a complex doping controversy.
