Violence broke out on Sunday in the Alaba Rago area of Iba, Lagos State, following a confrontation between road transport workers (agberos) and supporters of a local monarch over the unveiling of a new motor park. The park was allegedly established by the monarch to serve vehicles travelling to Nigeria’s northern and eastern regions, sparking tension among existing transport workers who viewed it as a threat to their control over the transport system and levies in the area.
The clash intensified in the early hours of the day near the newly constructed facility, resulting in chaotic scenes. Amid the fracas, a pedestrian attempting to cross the road was struck by a speeding vehicle and died instantly.
Footage circulating online showed residents gathering at the scene, shielding the victim’s body from view. The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that the Commissioner of Police visited the area for an assessment.
Efforts to broker peace and prevent further escalation are ongoing as security measures have been tightened to restore calm in the community.
